Tanita Brown’s life in Bushwick, Brooklyn, doesn’t have any slack. Still a teenager, she helps her grandmother raise her younger brother and provide shelter to recently evicted neighbours. When Tanita has the chance to speak about poverty at the United Nations, she’s excited but even more overwhelmed, especially when she meets the disparaging Blandine Dulavoir, a UN diplomat. Blandine runs her Manhattan life like a well-oiled machine – until meeting Tanita and the volunteers who run children’s art workshops on the sidewalk. When Ahmed travels from Tanzania to New York, both Tanita and Blandine are pushed to re-examine the ways they look at the world

WOMEN, MEN & COUNTRY, PUBLISHING FOR A CAUSE

WOMEN, MEN & COUNTRY | An Anthology Of African Poems – Compiled by Khadi Mansary, Foreword by Isha Sesay

Women, Men & Country is an exciting collection of new poetry from Africa. The poems vary from traditional formats, long and short to Japanese-style haikus.

Some tell of the trials of womanhood, others are meditations and reflections of the past. There are love songs and affirmations and some just simply honour the flag. Profits from the sale of this publication go to the Peagie Woobay Scholarship Fund.

The charity was set up to highlight the importance of educating girls and the risks of teenage pregnancy. With contributions ranging from the daly efforts of school children, to experts who have been writing for decades.

The poets are mainly women from Sierra Leone, but there are also notable verses from men and poets from other African countries. The result is a rich and diverse collection representing Africa at its best.
